Bernard J. Bartels

          Bernard J. Bartels, 94, of Grand Island died Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island.

          Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday at Christ Lutheran Church.  Reverend Thomas Clark will officiate. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery with military honors by the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul.

          Visitation will be on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the church.

          Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice.

          Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.

          Mr. Bartels was born July 24, 1921 in Tobias, NE to John and Amalia (Endorf) Bartels.

          He grew up on the farm and attended Zion Parochial School and then Tobias High School, graduating in 1939.

          Bernard served in the United States Army from 1942 until 1945.  While in the Army, he served in New Guinea, Okinawa, Philippines and Korea.

          He was united in marriage to Viola Bender on April 20, 1947 in Scotland, SD.  This union was blessed with five sons, Stephen, James, Dwight, Timothy and Brian.

          Bernard’s employment took him to Danbury, IA, Bradshaw, NE, and Wagner, SD.  After his retirement the couple lived in Albion and St. Paul.

          On March 29, 2011 they entered the Nebraska Veteran’s Home in Grand Island.

          He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in St. Paul, the VFW in Bradshaw and a lifetime member of the American Legion in Hampton.

          Survivors include his wife, Viola of Grand Island; five sons and three daughters-in-law, Stephen and Terry Bartels of Greeley, CO, James and Sharleen Bartels of St. Paul, Dwight Bartels of Manhattan, KS, Timothy Bartels of Holyoke, CO and Brian and Stacy Bartels of Jewell, IA; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three step grandchildren.

          He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Walter and Genevieve Bartels and Donald Bartels; 3 sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Otto Nolte, Erna and Henry Schrenbeck, Lucile and Walter Nun; an infant brother and an infant great-granddaughter.
