Donald E. Hughes

          Donald E. Hughes, 86, of Scotia died Monday, March 20, 2017 at his home in Scotia.

          Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Scotia.  Reverend Mark Middendorf will officiate.  Inurnment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Scotia with military honors by Rueben Beck American Legion Post #150 of Scotia.

          In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church or the family encourages you to plant a tree in Don's memory.

          Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.

          Don was born March 29, 1930 in St. Paul to William Earl and Josie Garnet (Tuma) Hughes.

          Don first attended school in St. Paul through the 8th grade and the family moved to Scotia where Don attended high school and graduated from Scotia High School in 1947.

          After his schooling he began working on a farm.

          Don was united in marriage to Peggy Blanchard on July 18, 1949 at the Catholic Church in Scotia.

          The couple lived in Scotia where Don worked at the local Co-op.

          Don was drafted in the U.S. Army on January 11, 1952, serving until receiving his discharge on January 10, 1954.

          Don and Peggy returned to Scotia where they lived on a farm.  Don began farming with his father.  He continued to farm for many years.  They moved in Scotia in 1985, but Don continued to be engaged in the farming operation for many years.

          Don was very involved in getting the Twin Loups Water Reclamation Project established, serving as president on the board.  He worked at the ASCS office in Greeley and he enjoyed working with the American Legion State Oration Contest.

          Don adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He was a good cook.

          He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Scotia, serving as an Elder, the Rueben Beck American Legion Post #150, 40 & 8 and he served on the rural Fire Board.

          Survivors include his wife, Peggy of Scotia; two sons and daughters-in-law, Craig and Gigi Hughes of Scotia and Douglas and Victoria Hughes of Lincoln; a daughter and her partner, Judy Hughes and Maureen Dobel of Denver; eight grandchildren, Candi Hughes, Casey Hughes and his fiancé Cari Brown, Mandi Shoemaker and her husband, Nick, Heather Fox and her husband, Casey, Matt Hughes and his wife, Teri, Trevor Marlow, Kelsea Hughes, Cera-Rose Hughes and her fiancé Sam Bennett; eight great-grandchildren, Brookelyn, Ava, and Charlee Fox, Hudson and Knoxson Hughes, and Luke, Landon and Mason Shoemaker; and a brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Linda Hughes of Omaha.

          He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother and a sister-in-law, Russ and Clarie Hughes.
