Leslie L. Hawthorne

          Leslie L. Hawthorne, 85, of Palmer died Sunday, April 23, 2017 at his home near Palmer.

          Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Palmer.  Reverend Martin Leeper will officiate.  Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Palmer.

          Visitation will be on Wednesday, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the church.

          Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the donor’s choice.

          Greenway Funeral Home in Palmer is in charge of arrangements.

          Leslie was born July 28, 1931 in Central City to Earl and Ona (Gallagher) Hawthorne.

          He started school in Fullerton before moving with his family to Hood River, OR where he graduated from high school in 1949.  He moved to the Palmer area at age 19.

          He met and married Ruth Moore on May 15, 1955 in Monroe, NE.  The couple moved into their current home east of Palmer in June 1956.

          Leslie worked at Lemmerman’s Farms and Hatchery from 1955 – 1980 when the hatchery closed.

          He ended his working career as a local truck driver after nearly 20 years of driving.

          Leslie enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, camping and traveling to visit family and to sightsee.  He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

          He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Palmer.

          Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Palmer; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Gary and Cindy Hawthorne and Lowell Hawthorne, all of Grand Island; three daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and Robert Rother of Lindsay, Wilma and Chris DeRuiter of Elgin, TX and Ellen and Jim Addison of Omaha; twelve grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lonnie and Deb Hawthorne of Elwood, NE and Randy and Mary Hawthorne of Central City and three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Linda and LaVern Debord of Kearney, Twilla and Eldie Stahl of Columbus and Kay Carter of Orleans.

          He is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Laura Lee Hawthorne and a brother, Donald Hawthorne.
