My sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Gerald. The loss of our dear loved ones can be very difficult and distressing to cope with. True comfort comes in knowing that Jehovah ( Psalm 83 : 18 - God's name ) is not the cause of our pain, suffering and death, Hebrews 2 : 14 tells us the source. May you be comforted in knowing that Jehovah hates death ( 1 Corinthian 15 : 26 ) and promises to eliminate death forever and bring ones sleeping in death back to life on a cleansed earth. ( John 17 : 3; Isaiah 25 : 7,8; Revelation 21 : 3-5; Acts 24 : 15; Psalms 37 : 10,11, 29 ). Also, may your own good and loving memories of Gerald help to soothe your hearts, as we remember that our dear loved ones now safely rest in the loving memory of our Grand Creator, Jehovah God, waiting for the fulfillment of His promised purpose for us all. Sincerely

Condolences to Janet and the family. Jerry and I first met in the early 1960's when he came through a hedge row/bushes that separated his 4-plex apartment from my parent's home and asked me if he could shoot baskets with me at our BB goal. That would be the first of many BB visits. When I was about 14, Jerry asked me If I would like to work for him the upcoming Saturday at his farm NW of St. Paul. Janet and he were remodeling a house to move into some day and there would be farm work at his place and AJ's farm. Of course I said yes that would great. That one Saturday's work was followed by two years worth of Saturday's work and two entire summer school breaks work. Jerry was a great teacher not only about work ethic but on expectations of life. As Jerry was working for Allied Chemical at the time, even today I am amazed about the trust he had in a 14 year old neighbor boy as he was traveling most of the week. He had the most positive attitude of how to live ones life. Jerry was also instrumental in the formation and a teacher/instructor in the our St. Paul CYO group in the 1960's. Seeing a condolence from Elaine Pflepsen reminds me the CYO participation was instrumental in my meeting Tom Pflepsen and getting a job for my high school years at Gambles.
Over the years and separated by distance I would see Jerry from time to time mostly at "playing cards" and we would reminisce about the "good old days" including a Saturday last fall during a TV NU football game when we missed half the game by laughing at some of the experiences and people encountered during of that early 1960's timeframe. Jerry made a difference in one's life. He was a good friend and role model. He will be missed but as Jerry would have said "It is God's will" that he was called home.

My heart breaks. Late last night, I found out this man passed away. The world lost another good one.

My memories of Jerry go back to my ripe old age of 15. You see, I worked in my now mother in laws small café - the same café that Jerry visited quite often. Although our moments of laughter and conversation were always fleeting, it quite quickly felt as if we had a special bond. He always had wisdom to share and words of encouragement to give. I'm sure his interactions with others were very similar.

Through the years he became to know me even better, and on awards day my senior year, he presented me with one of my local scholarships for college. I continued to work through college at that café and he continued to check in on me and make sure I was still staying out of trouble. I looked forward to seeing his face every day...he was one of my favorite regulars. He told me multiple times, school before babies...and I would always offer some words of encouragement on those silly cigars he bought too.

Jerry was present the day I married Steve. Every time I ran into Jerry, he was always so pleasant, happy, and you could see he genuinely cared for others...something that can hard to find nowadays.

As I look back on my life and those brief interactions with him, I can only hope to be this person for someone else some day. Who would have thought that those brief interactions would have such an impact on someone else? Thank you Jerry for showing me the person I want to be someday, thank you for the words of encouragement and wisdom, and thanks for just being you. You will be missed.

Jerry was one my heroes when I was young ever since I met him when I was 6 years old in California at my Mom and Dad's house. He, Larry Ward and Sonny Ward used to come every weekend from their base and play cards into the wee hours. He had an infectious laugh and a great heart.
The last time I saw him in St. Paul I told him he was my childhood idol back then. He said "There are a lot better men than me to be a kids idol". I did not believe him then and I don't believe him now.
A good man gone. We will miss him.

Janet, Eric, Kelly and Loved Ones,

My deepest sympathy and prayers as you grieve such a great loss. Not only was Jerry dedicated to his family and loved ones, he also shared his love and dedication within the numerous communities he served. I will never forget his dedication to the American Legion Club. An entity worth every thought and moment spent respecting those who have served. Jerry served with heart.

With my condolences,

Elaine Pflepsen
