Grand Island

Carol Lee (Burke) Benson, 75, of Grand Island, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026, at Emerald Nursing & Rehab Lakeview in Grand Island.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at Jacobsen-Greenway-Dietz Funeral Home in St. Paul. Pastor Bob Carlson will be officiating.  A Private Inurnment will be held in the Nysted Cemetery.

Carol was born on September 2, 1950, in Columbus, and throughout her 75 years, she touched the lives of those around her with her steadfast kindness, gentle humor, and unwavering faith.

Carol’s early years were marked by a spirit of determination and adventure. She began her education in a one-room schoolhouse in Genoa, often riding her horse to class—an early testament to both her practicality and her independence. She went on to graduate from Genoa High School in 1968, and then pursued further education, graduating from the Medical Institute of Minnesota in June of 1969 as a Medical Technician.

With a strong commitment to helping others, Carol worked as a Lab Technician for about ten years. Although health issues eventually prevented her from continuing her career, her dedication and professionalism were noted by all who worked alongside her.

Community and faith were central to Carol’s life. She was a devoted member of The Lutheran Church in Dannenbrog for many years, drawing strength and comfort from her faith during both joyful and difficult times. Her deep spiritual life sustained her through many personal health challenges, as well as those faced by her beloved daughter, Cindy.

Carol found joy in simple pleasures and lasting friendships. She delighted in attending tractor shows across the state, often accompanied by her good friend, John Swanson. Together, they created cherished memories at these events, notably participating in the "RFD-TV Breaks Guinness World Record for Largest Parade of Classic Tractors" at the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island on August 28, 2012.

Family was always at the heart of Carol’s world. She is survived by her brother, Keith Burke, who remained a loving source of support and companionship. Carol is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Viola Burke; her husband, Erv Benson; and her daughter, Cindy Benson, whom she loved dearly and remembered each day with profound affection.

Carol Lee Benson’s life was defined by her compassion, her resilience in the face of adversity, and her faith. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate to share in her journey.
