Edward Eugene Obermiller

November 4, 1937 — March 19, 2010

Edward Eugene "Gene" Obermiller, 72, of Grand Island died Friday, March 19, 2010 at Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. Officiating will be Ellen Campbell. Interment will be held in Kelso Cemetery near Farwell. Military rites will be presented at graveside. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Sunday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Memorials are suggested to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Association, the Boelus Fire Department or to the American Cancer Society.

Eugene was born November 4, 1937 to Edward & Dolores (Buresch) Obermiller at Dannebrog on his grandmother's kitchen table.

He attended country schools until the 9th grade when he started high school at St. Paul. He transferred to Boelus High School for the 11th -12th grade and graduated in 1955.

For a time he worked for farmers in the area. On August 16, 1961 he entered the Army and was honorably discharged on August 15, 1963.

Eugene was united into marriage to Donna Barr on February 1, 1964 at Ravenna. To this union one daughter, LaDonna and three sons, Devin, Damon and Daron Obermiller were born.

He farmed until his health kept him from doing it anymore. But he never lost his interest in the farm always wanting to know how the crops were doing.

Eugene also worked for the Motley Auction Company in Grand Island for a number of years. He enjoyed going to the auctions where he brought home many treasures such as toy tractors and for which he collected and was very proud of.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul and the American Legion in Grand Island.

After moving to Grand Island six years ago he loved to garden and he was always so proud to share the produce with the neighbors or anyone who needed it.

Survivors include his wife, Donna of Grand Island; three sons & daughters-in-law, Devin & Leanna (Hall) Obermiller of Dannebrog, Damon & Jodi (Borer) Obermiller of Cairo, and Daron & Jennifer (Dexter) Obermiller of Grand Island; one daughter, LaDonna Obermiller of Grand Island; six grandchildren, Tom Ruvalcaba, Anna Ruvalcaba, McKayla Obermiller, Nathanal Obermiller, K.C. Boltz and Megan Boltz; one sister & brother-in-law, Karen & Jesse Shuck of Ayr; three nephews and their spouses, Tim & Cheryl Shuck of Hastings, Ken & Karen Shuck of Edgar, and Mike & Deb Shuck of Hastings; one aunt, Bonnie Murphy of Lincoln; mother-in-law, Katherine Barr of Ravenna; brothers-in-law and their wives, Larry and Char Barr of Beverly, KS and Dennis and Karen Barr of Omaha; sister-in-law and her husband, Tery and Ken Hervert of Ravenna; and many cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law Ray Barr.
