Mr. Burkhardt was born November 16, 1926 on the family farm west of Palmer to Ernest Paul and Hildegard (Hienzig) Burkhardt.
He was raised on the farm and attended rural school near his home.
After his schooling, he farmed with his father.
Ernest was united in marriage to Mabel Freeland on April 12, 1947 in Manhattan, Kansas. When Ernest and Mabel returned to Palmer from being married, they moved into the home on the family farm where the couple farmed for all of their lives.
There was a short time that the couple spent time in California near their son Roger where Ernest did farm work and hauled hay.
The couple enjoyed fishing for trout and camping on Grove Lake near Verdigre, NE. Ernest liked to garden and he also had an orchard on his farm. Ernest liked to read all types of books and magazines and play board games. He had a knack for working on and tinkering with all types of equipment and improving it. He designed and built a loader for a tractor he owned.
Ernest helped other people with carpentry and electrical work.
He was a member of the Church of God-Seventh Day and he had a very strong faith in God.
