Dwight F. Ackles, 75, of rural Scotia died December 27, 2009 at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul after a battle with lung cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Reverend Martha Voigt and Reverend Joseph Javorsky will officiate.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 8:00 on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Ackles was born January 31, 1934 in Sherman County, NE to Franklin and Helen (Philbrick) Ackles.
He lived with his family in rural Garfield and Valley Counties as a child. They moved to California where they lived for a short time before returning to Nebraska. He attended rural grade schools and high school in Ord and Burwell.
Dwight served in the U.S. Army from 1956 - 1958 and was stationed in Germany.
He was united in marriage to Oline Jensen of Elba on December 13, 1959 at the Dannevirke Lutheran Church.
To this union six children were born; Galen, Reba, Rene`, Trina, Shawn and Shannon.
The couple lived in rural Sherman and Howard County. Dwight was a farmer and rancher and also worked in carpentry for several years. He also did his own mechanical work on the farm.
He took pride in his cattle and loved to see the calves in the spring. He liked getting the haying and harvesting done.
The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on December 13, 2009.
Dwight enjoyed his children and grandchildren. He made many kites and toys for his children. Dwight loved to play the guitar and making music with his family.
He taught his wife and daughters to play the guitar and was starting to teach the grandchildren. He liked the old country songs.
He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, and he was an expert hunter. He also liked to restore old tractors.
Survivors include his wife, Oline of Scotia; two sons and daughters-in-law, Galen and Laurie Ackles of Cotesfield, and Shawn and Nicole Ackles of Scotia; three daughters, and two sons-in-law, Rene` and Doug Derner of St. Paul, Trina and Craig Beed of Shelton and Shannon Ackles of St. Paul; son-in-law, Russell Wysocki of St. Paul; 16 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Jean Ackles of Ord; and three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Reatha Beneke of Ord, Maxine and Wayne Mattern of Ainsworth and Lois and Duane Kjeldgaard of Las Vegas, NV.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Reba Ackles Wysocki; and one grandson Logan Derner.
