Richard J. "Dick" Nielsen, 81, of Carlsbad, CA died Sunday, July 08, 2012 in Carlsbad.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 19, 2012 at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Reverend Carolyn Hellerich will officiate. Interment will be in the Oakridge Cemetery in Dannebrog will military honors by the Mickelsen-Larkowski American Legion Post #241 of Dannebrog.
Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in St. Paul.
Mr. Nielsen was born December 7, 1930 in Grand Island to Peter and Anna (Nielsen) Nielsen. He received his education in the Dannebrog schools where he graduated in 1948.
Richard worked at the VA Hospital in Grand Island for a year during its construction. He then worked at Farmer's Union in Dannebrog from 1950 - 1952.
Richard served in the US Army in Korea from June 1952 until receiving his discharge in March 1954. After his discharge, he moved to Long Beach, CA where he worked for Union Carbide in Torrance, CA as a millwright.
From 1962 until 1967 he was employed by the City of Los Angeles as a heavy duty equipment mechanic.
In November 1967 he was united in marriage to Mary Rodriguez.
He returned to Union Carbide in the Linde Division as a plant maintenance superintendent of the Wilmington, CA Oxygen Plant in November 1967. He served in the position until 1980. From 1980 until his retirement in 1991, he covered all the various air separation plants from the west coast east to New Mexico, supervising the repairs to machinery breakdowns and yearly plant shutdowns.
His companion, Rose Marie Coons, and he enjoyed the California desert in the winters, staying at outdoor resort of Palm Springs. They visited Nebraska every year during Grundluvs Fest in Dannebrog. They also spent several weeks each year exploring the beautiful Anza-Borrego Desert in California.
Dick enjoyed boating, off road biking, reading, camping, music, and loved to barbeque.
He was a self taught mechanical engineer who could repair anything.
Survivors include his companion, Rose Marie Coons of Carlsbad, CA and his extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ardene and Byron Nielsen.
