Sr. Nis N. Bennetzen

Nis N. Bennetzen, Sr., 94, of St. Paul died Saturday, May 15, 2010 at the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Reverend Martha Voigt will officiate. Interment will be held in South Logan Cemetery north of St. Paul. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Ascera Hospice or the St. Paul Senior Center.
Mr. Bennetzen was born May 16, 1915 in St. Paul to Nis and Anna Marie (Christensen) Bennetzen.
Nis was raised in the St. Paul area and attended school in a small rural school north of St. Paul. After his schooling, he worked for 15 months for the Civilian Conservation Corp.
He was united in marriage to Sena Johansen on December 18, 1940 in Hastings.
The couple moved to Wyoming where Nis worked for the Wyoming Hereford Ranch near Cheyenne for 9 years, earning five dollars a month. Nis and Sena returned to Nebraska where they farmed, mainly in the Howard and Hall counties areas near St. Libory. Nis retired in the late 1980's and the couple then moved into St. Paul.
On December 18, 1940, the couple celebrated 66 years of marriage.
Nis enjoyed talking about his time at the ranch in Wyoming and the horses that he broke. He also liked to fix tractors, take walks and read newspapers. Nis and Sena liked to travel. One of his loves was to talk to his grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Nis and Sharon Bennetzen, Jr. of Grand Island and Gaylen and Emma Bennetzen of Phoenix; three daughers and a son-in-law, Vickie McIntosh of Palmer, Rita Sorensen of Grand Island and Joann and Roger Rayburn of Flemingsburg, KY; 13 grandchildren; 3 great-granddaughters; 5 step grandchildren; 17 step great-grandchildren and 7 step great great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sena on February 6, 2007; and infant granddaughter, Bridget Faith Bennetzen; a son-in-law, Wendell McIntosh; a sister, Kjestine Howery; two half brothers, Jimmy and Alvin Jensen and his step-father, Jens Jensen.
