Douglas was born on November 27, 1956, in Fullerton, Nebraska, to Elmer LeRoy and Gladys Marie Patton.  He grew up on the family farm outside of Fullerton and received his education at country school as well as at Fullerton Public School, graduating from Fullerton High School in 1975, where he earned the FFA State Farmer Degree.  Doug obtained an associate degree in agriculture from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  He returned to the family farm near Fullerton, assisting his father, and, a short time later, moved to the Palmer area to farm with his grandfather. Doug was united in marriage to Karrie Jo Bartlett on August 18, 1983, in Denver, Colorado.  After establishing a homestead of their own outside of Palmer, Doug and Karrie raised five children in the traditions of the family farm, operating for over 38 years.

Spending his days outdoors, he enjoyed raising cattle and growing crops, teaching his wife, children, and grandchildren the values of country living.  Doug’s children and grandchildren were his life’s joy! A faithful baptized Christian, Doug loved the Lord with all of his heart and served as a spiritual leader for many.  He was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in St. Paul and the Rural Fire Board in Palmer.  Doug always had a way with words, spoken and written.  He enjoyed writing, publishing a book of his own poetry in 1991.  A careful observer, he had a knack for using his wit to make others smile or laugh; there was always a story to tell!  Doug was an avid coin collector and a fan of Creighton University basketball.  A man of integrity, Doug was patient, humble, witty, and kind.  He sought to converse with anyone and everyone, resulting in many dear friendships.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Karrie Patton of Palmer; children & spouses, Tracy & Adrian Anderson of St. Paul, Christopher and Christina Patton of Laveen, Arizona, Chauncey and Kelly Patton of St. Petersburg, Florida, Emily and Jesse Royle of Grand Island, and Elizabeth and A.J. Shotkoski of Palmer; 13 grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Tracy and Chris Chapman of Spring, Texas; and brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Suzy Patton of Fullerton.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Janice Hanchera.
