Jens was born on March 22, 1935 to Bertha Cassel and Jens L Nielsen. Jens was born at home on the Howard County homestead north of Cushing, NE the 12th of 13 children. He attended a rural grade school and graduated from Cushing High School in 1952—1 of 4 students to graduate that year.

He met his first wife, H. Junell Rice in Portland, Oregon where they were married and lived for 16 years and then moved to Colorado for 22 years. Jens moved to Arkansas in 1989 after Junell’s death for a new job.
He was married to Susan Rothwell Johnson in Arkansas in 1998.
Jens was an avid golfer and loved to read, watch old movies-especially westerns. Big band dancing, tractors, gardening, and playing cards were some of his favorite pastimes.
He is survived by his wife, Susan of St. Paul; daughter and son-in-law, Gaynell and Nick Belloni of Arkansas; granddaughter, Jasmine Belloni of Arkansas; and brother, Paul Nielsen of Wolbach.
