Melvin was united in marriage to Carolyn "Sue" Lambertus on April 23, 1966 in Grand Island. They lived in Grand Island until 1976 when they moved to Dannebrog, where they have lived for 46 years. Melvin worked for Case New Holland in Grand Island for 31 years, retiring in 1998. He enjoyed fishing and camping with friends and family. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
