Vivian E. Newlon

          Vivian E. Newlon, 91, of Palmer died Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at Brookefield Park in St. Paul.

          Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday at Greenway Funeral Home in Palmer.  Reverend Jerry Quandt will officiate.  Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Palmer.

          Visitation will be on Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

          Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice.

          Miss Newlon was born November 27, 1923 on the family farm southwest of Palmer to Floyd and Theda (McCann) Newlon.

          She attended rural school at District 41 to the 8th grade and then she attended Palmer High School, which she rode to school for a couple of years on horseback.  She graduated in 1942.  Vivian then attended St. Paul Business College for a year.

          Vivian worked as a secretary and bookkeeper in Lawrence, KS.

          In the fall of 1946, she entered the Manhattan Christian College in Manhattan, KS and worked in the Agronomy Department of Kansas State University.

          In September, 1950 she served as a girl’s dormitory and food service supervisor at Nebraska Christian College in Norfolk while also taking classes herself.

          She worked as an aide at Parkside and Immanuel Hospitals in Omaha and in 1952 returned to Palmer to work at the Coolidge Hospital.

          Vivian worked as a bookkeeper for Cargill in Aurora from 1954 until 1963, Grosham’s Sales and Orin Countryman Associates in Grand Island.

          In September 1969 she worked for the Lutheran Hospital in Grand Island before accepting a bookkeeping job for the Loup Basin Reclamation District in Farwell.

          In April of 1985 she worked for St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island, working in home health.  She continued to do home health in the Palmer area, taking care of several of her neighbors.

          Vivian liked to play the piano and organ, playing duets with her sister, Irene.  She also gave piano lessons.

          She was a member of the First Church of Christ in Palmer and the Willing Workers.

          Survivors include her sister, Irene Newlon of Palmer and three cousins and their spouses, Gordon and Joan Smith of Wichita, KS, Richard and Ardith Hartford of Omaha and Marta and Roger Chilton of Dixon, NM.

          She is preceded in death by her parents.
